Gone are the days when the Gold Coast’s one claim to fame was its incredible beach culture. While the golden stretches of sand and glistening, blue waters are still just as big of a call card, the region is now also home to a seemingly never-ending range of bespoke venues, breweries, hidden bars, and luxe rooftop spaces.

Although Queensland’s surf city has certainly raised the bar when it comes to drinking destinations, the teams behind these venues are still doing their part to cater to the more health conscious of the group. When paired with the state-wide ban on smoking in public spaces, you can expect to find plenty of non-smoking nightlife venues across the Gold Coast.

Mr P.P’s Deli and Rooftop

Once the residence of Postmaster General Philip Palmer Agnew (Mr P.P) and his family, this 1968 building is found right in the heart of Southport’s CBD. It’s come a long way since its days as a residential home and is now an impressive deli, pizzeria and bar at street level – and Southport’s first rooftop bar up top.

Stick to the ground floor for a night of incredible Italian eats, including the likes of pizza, deli meats, cheese and pasta. This is where you’ll want to be for an intimate or romantic night out with friends or that special someone. But if you’re looking for something a little more upbeat, make your way upstairs for a night of tunes, high vibes and seriously tasty cocktails. During the day, the rooftop bar is drenched in sunshine and afterhours, you can watch the world go by under the twinkling stars. It’s as good as nightlife gets.

Where: 43 Nerang St, Southport

Nineteen at the Star

Nineteen at the Star is the place to be for a glam night out. Located on the 19th floor of The Darling, a luxury suite hotel inside the refurbished The Star Gold Coast, this luxe rooftop bar boasts sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the city’s skyline and beyond. The indoor-outdoor venue spills onto an ocean-facing balcony that comes complete with an infinity pool and day beds to lounge on while you’re sipping margaritas and people watching. From here, you’ll have the opportunity to breathe in the clean coastal air and listen to the sound of waves crashing in the distance.

Once the sun starts to set, this smoke-free Gold Coast venue really turns up the dial. We’re talking fresh beats from the very best up-and-coming DJs, as well as solid performances from well-known international names. With tunes pumping through the speakers until late every weekend, you can easily spend an entire night strutting your stuff on the dancefloor and getting groovy with your mates. Just be sure to have your phone at the ready, because the overwhelm of it all may just see some of your buddy’s attempt some dance move that they really shouldn’t try.

Precinct Brewing Co

As the Gold Coast continues to build its reputation as being a reputation for beer-lovers, the region has added yet another newcomer to the scene. Precinct Brewing Co is tucked away in Miami and is housed in an old workshop that’s been transformed into a community drinking hole. The loud and vibrant setting is hard to miss from the street, with graffiti-style art cover the entirety of its white brick façade.

Once you’re inside, everything is just as impressive. The Precinct team brew their beers onsite using locally sourced ingredients to give their range a real coast flavour. From fresh and fruity XPAs to tropical stouts and hoppy sours, you can wet your whistle on a variety of different combinations and concoctions. Did we mention they’ve got beer-friendly share plates and pizzas too? Yep, it really is one of the best non-smoking nightlife venues that you’ll find.

Burleigh Pavilion

Any Gold Coast local worth their salt will tell you that the Burleigh Pavilion is an institution that simply needs to be visited. It’s hard not to breathe a relaxed sight of relief as you plonk down on one of the waterfront picnic tables with a house cocktail or Stone and Wood in hand. Not only are you treated to the best view of the Gold Coast on offer, but you’re also surrounded by a truly incredible setting that only adds to the vibe. We’re talking white-washed everything, coastal panelling and touches of soft pink to add to the mood.

Get in early to snag one of the front tables and then plan on staying long into the night. You can soak up all the drinks with a woodfired pizza, beer battered fish and chips, or the best loaded nachos we’ve ever tasted. Once the sun starts to set, you’ll also find the DJ cranks up the tunes and the dancefloor comes to life.
